One of the more interesting activities that will take place during the upcoming Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) 2011 is Startup Weekend, a 54-hour event where innovative minds come together to conceptualize and launch companies. During Startup Weekend – which will take place from Friday through Sunday during GEW – developers, designers, marketers, product managers and startup enthusiasts get together to share ideas, form teams, build products and launch startups. In the United States, Startup Weekend will see more than 50 events throughout the country.

We’re likely to see many potential startup companies get formed during Startup Weekend – and it’s also a great way to stir creative juices and encourage entrepreneurship. “Startup Weekend is a bedrock initiative of Global Entrepreneurship Week, serving communities and industries around the globe by connecting aspiration and imagination with resource and expertise,” says Carl Schramm, president of the Kauffman Foundation. “It is an important piece of the connective tissue that links the world’s startup ecosystem.”

Global Startup Battle

In the U.S., one winner will be chosen from each city participating in Startup Weekend. The winners will participate in the Global Startup Battle, where one winner will be chosen as the Global Startup Weekend Champion.

The Global Startup Battle will start on Nov. 21, the week after GEW, where the winning teams will upload one-minute pitch videos into the Startup Weekend Facebook page. A public vote will decide on the overall winner, who will be announced on Nov. 30, 2011.
